ABSTRACT

This study investigates the impact of media frames and emotional discourses on civic identity and community sentiment in local festivals with active citizen participation, especially the Iksan Seodong Festival. Using Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis (CDA), 21 media articles from 2021 to 2025 were analyzed at the text, discourse, and social practice levels. The analysis results identified four media frames: civic participation, content-oriented, administrative-oriented, and tourism promotion, which are linked to emotional codes such as pride, contribution, expectation, vitality, and community sentiment. The civic participation frame portrays citizens as active festival planners, interpreters, and participants, reinforcing civic identity through the expression of pride and community sentiment. In contrast, the content-oriented and tourism promotion frames portray citizens as primarily passive spectators, emphasizing expectation and vitality, while the administrative-oriented frame portrays citizens as indirect beneficiaries. This study emphasizes that civic participation and citizen-led festivals play an important role in reinforcing community identity and civic autonomy, and suggests specific policies such as institutionalizing citizen committees and introducing participatory budgeting. Future research should quantitatively evaluate citizen identity through festival participation and conduct comparative analysis of various festivals.
