ABSTRACT

This study deeply explores the lives and musical contributions of Emilio Pujol(1886-1980) and his disciple Alberto Ponce(1935-2019), who established a pivotal lineage in 20th-century Spanish classical guitar education. Pujol, a direct disciple of Francisco Tárrega(1852-1909), systematized his mentor's innovative performance techniques and pedagogical philosophy and significantly broadened the academic scope of the guitar through his early music research. Ponce, inheriting this scholarly tradition, established an innovative teaching paradigm at the École Normale de Musique de Paris, contributing to the expansion of the guitar repertoire through his dedication to contemporary and early music, and fostering numerous world-class guitarists. By comparatively analyzing the pedagogical philosophies, performance styles, and academic achievements of both figures, this research comprehensively assesses their profound impact on the development of classical guitar education and performance art, meticulously highlighting the transmission of musical heritage through the master-disciple relationship. This study elucidates how the Spanish classical guitar tradition was inherited and developed in a modern context through the musical lineage of Pujol and Ponce, offering important academic implications for the future direction of guitar education and research.
