ABSTRACT

This study aimed to examine the mediating effects of aging anxiety and appearance management behavior in the relationship between covert narcissism and emotional crisis among middle-aged women. A total of 578 women aged 40 to 59 residing in metropolitan areas of South Korea participated in the study. Data were analyzed using SPSS 21.0 and AMOS 21.0, including confirmatory factor analysis and structural equation modeling. The results showed that, first, covert narcissism had a significant positive correlation with both aging anxiety and emotional crisis, but was not significantly correlated with appearance management behavior. Second, the sub-factors of covert narcissism and aging anxiety significantly influenced emotional crisis, while only body shape management among appearance-related behaviors had a significant effect. Third, structural equation modeling revealed a significant indirect effect of covert narcissism on emotional crisis mediated by aging anxiety, whereas appearance management behavior did not show a significant mediating effect. Fourth, covert narcissism was also found to have a significant direct effect on emotional crisis. This study contributes to the literature by identifying the structural relationships among psychological variables that affect emotional crisis in middle-aged women. The findings provide a theoretical foundation for developing educational and counseling programs aimed at preventing psychological crises and promoting emotional stability in this population.
