ABSTRACT

This study explores whether dream analysis based on Carl G. Jung’s theory provides counselors with positive opportunities for deepening self-understanding, establishing identity and individuality, and fostering psychological growth through interpreting their inner emotions and unconscious messages. To achieve this, in-depth interviews were conducted with four master's students who had completed an intermediate-level dream analysis course, using Giorgi’s phenomenological method. The analysis revealed two main findings. First, the dreams experienced by the counselors served as tools to reveal unconscious conflicts and repressed emotions, thereby facilitating deeper self-understanding and integration of their inner aspects. Second, through dream analysis, counselors were able to re-examine themselves, clarify their personal values and goals, and make meaningful decisions in life, which in turn promoted personal growth and individuation. In conclusion, Jung’s dream analysis was shown to contribute to identity formation and the individuation process by enabling counselors to explore their inner world, recognize unconscious conflicts, and engage in dialogue between the ego and the unconscious. This study suggests that such an approach can enhance counselor professionalism and provide meaningful implications for clinical practice. Future research is recommended to quantitatively compare symbolic meanings in dreams and variations in the individuation process, as well as explore interactions between dream analysis and other therapeutic approaches.
