ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the historical development and limitations of the Theory of Fortune and Misfortune(吉凶禍福論) through a comprehensive review of relevant literature. Although the etymological origins of the concept(Fortune and Misfortune) can be traced to the Records of the Three Kingdoms, Book of Wu, specifically in the "Biography of Taishi Ci", the term "Fortune and Misfortun" also appears in the Qingwujing, the foremost classic text on Feng Shui. However, the integration of this concept with Feng Shui has sparked significant controversy and unintended consequences, attracting sharp criticism from numerous scholars. These critiques have taken different forms across historical periods, focusing on the inherent blind spots within the Theory of Fortune and Misfortune. Depending on the time and place, interpretations of Fortune and Misfortune have manifested in diverse forms within Feng Shui, increasingly becoming a tool for fulfilling human desires. Despite its long-standing history and practical utility, the Theory of Fortune and Misfortune has yet to be fully elucidated in terms of its concrete substance. The absence of verifiable methods and a clear theoretical framework has hindered its academic validation.
