ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the negative effects of adolescents' experiences of discrimination damage on self-esteem. To this end, the analysis was conducted on 5,860 adolescents based on the 2022 Korean Children and Youth Human Rights Survey data surveyed by the Korea Youth Policy Institute in 2022. For the research method, correlation analysis and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted using the SPSS 29 program. In the analysis of the experience of discrimination damage, first, it was found that the lower the economic level, the more discrimination was experienced by female students. In the experience of discrimination damage, the experience of discrimination related to gender, economic level, and academic achievement was remarkable. Such experiences of discrimination were identified as a major cause of negative influence on adolescents' self-esteem. Second, as a result of correlation analysis, it was empirically confirmed that self-esteem had a negative (-) correlation with the experience of discrimination damage, and that adolescents' experiences of discrimination damage had a negative (-) effect on self-esteem through regression analysis. These results suggest that adolescents who have experienced discrimination damage in adolescence have difficulty forming self-esteem, which adversely affects social adaptation and psychological welfare in the long run.
