ABSTRACT

This study is meaningful as a guide to experience emotional growth by examining the defense mechanism of middle-aged female counselors through cognitive exploration and dream interpretation of their future changes caused by the influence of the defense mechanism. The research questions are 'What is the defense mechanism for middle-aged female counselors?' and 'What is unconscious insight through dream interpretation?' As a research method, 1 in 40s and 3 in 50s were selected as middle-aged female counselors who could explain unconscious insights in detail, and Giorgi phenomenology research method was selected. As a result of the study, first, middle-aged female counselors mainly used sublimation and altruism, which are mature defense mechanisms, and transposition and oppression, which are neurotic defense mechanisms. Second, middle-aged female counselors recognized unconscious emotions such as fear, anxiety, and responsibility through dream interpretation and explored inner conflict and defense mechanisms. This study has theoretical and therapeutic implications for inducing self-reflection and psychological development of middle-aged female counselors through dream interpretation.
