ABSTRACT

In order to investigate the effect of adolescents' human rights awareness on self-esteem, this study analyzed 5,860 adolescents based on data from the 2022 Korean Children and Youth Human Rights Survey surveyed by the Korea Youth Policy Institute. For the research method, frequency analysis, descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA analysis, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis were conducted using the SPSS 29 program. As a result of the study, first, the higher the adolescents' human rights awareness, the higher their self-esteem. Second, adolescents with a high economic level and a high level of education from their parents showed higher human rights awareness and self-esteem, suggesting the effect of social and cultural backgrounds on adolescents' human rights awareness and self-esteem. Third, as a result of regression analysis, human rights awareness was identified as an important predictor of self-esteem, and adolescents with positive attitudes and values toward human rights tended to have higher self-esteem. These results suggest that human rights awareness has an important influence on the formation of self-esteem in adolescence, and show that human rights education can play an important role in promoting self-esteem. The significance of this study is to emphasize the importance of human rights awareness in forming self-esteem in adolescence. Adolescents with high human rights awareness are more likely to positively evaluate themselves by having an attitude of respect for themselves and others, which contributes to the improvement of self-esteem. Therefore, the educational approach to promoting youth's self-esteem has a policy implication that it should move toward strengthening human rights education.
