ABSTRACT

This study offers a new interpretation of Nangangmang, a key text in Myeongrihak (Four Pillars of Destiny). It introduces 'Johwa Yongsin' (Creative Harmony Yongsin) as its central 'Yongsin' (guiding element) framework. This principle of 'Johwa' is shown to be a unifying framework, organically explaining various other theories presented within Nangangmang, including those related to neutrality and balance (Jungwha-ron), structural patterns (Gyeokguk-ron), advancement and retreat (Jintoe-ron), and familial relationships (Yukchin-ron). 'Johwa Yongsin' is consequently defined as the pivotal Five Elements configuration that enables a Saju (Four Pillars divinatory chart) to achieve its most ideal state of balance and vitality, in alignment with these natural principles of creative harmony. While Nangangmang is traditionally known for 'Johu' (seasonal balance), this research identifies 'Johwa' (natural creative harmony) as its core principle, arising from the interplay of the Five Elements. 'Johwa Yongsin' is defined as the key elements that bring ideal balance and vitality to a Saju (divinatory chart) based on this principle. The study illustrates this concept through 'Saeondokbo' (four-word verses). This reinterpretation of Nangangmang is expected to seek to expand the understanding of Yongsin theories within Myeongrihak.
