ABSTRACT

This study explores user experiences in the process of modern design creation based on traditional Korean images using generative AI. It examines how AI interprets elements of traditional Korean culture and analyzes its applicability to modern design production. The study was conducted using a four-stage design framework based on the Double Diamond model, with workshops involving students majoring in design and art. Additionally, surveys and in-depth interviews were conducted based on five evaluation criteria derived from previous research. The quantitative analysis showed that generative AI received positive evaluations for work efficiency and intuitiveness, whereas its score for cultural appropriateness was relatively low. Qualitative analysis revealed that the process of combining prompts encouraged creative thinking and enabled repetitive visualization experiments, contributing positively to the design experience. However, while the generated designs conveyed a traditional aesthetic, users experienced limitations in representing the unique cultural symbolism and emotional aspects of Korean heritage. This study provides academic and practical implications as a creative design experiment based on traditional culture and serves as foundational research for exploring the cultural applications of generative AI.
