ABSTRACT

His study analyzes the geomorphological characteristics of the tomb of Ryu Gong-chak (柳公綽), the grandfather of the renowned Joseon Dynasty scholar Seo-ae Ryu Seong-ryong (柳成龍), and examines its influence on the historical development and prosperity of the Pungsan Ryu clan. Located in Gunwi, Daegu, the site is traditionally renowned as “Oji Tangeum Hyeong” (五指彈琴形), symbolizing five fingers playing a zither. The analysis confirmed that the site sits precisely at the second finger (index finger), the most critical point for gathering vital energy (Gi) within the five-finger configuration. The surrounding mountainous terrain (Sasin-sa) provides stable protection, and the wicheon stream flows favorably, fulfilling the ideal conditions of a prime auspicious site. Scientific analysis using the compass (Luo-pan) further proved that the site avoids harmful geomantic forces such as Yongsang-palsal and Palyo-hwangcheonsal. In conclusion, the study empirically reaffirms that Ryu Gong-chak's tomb is an optimal location with superior topographical conditions. It demonstrates that this geographical setting served as a historical and cultural foundation for the clan's continuous success, extending from the Joseon era to modern leaders in business (Poongsan Group's Ryu Chan-u and Ryu Jin) and politics (Ryu Wu-ik, Ryu Don-u). This research holds significant academic value by objectively re-evaluating the influence of feng shui on a family's destiny through a detailed case study.
