ABSTRACT

This research is intended to investigate the structural correlation by comparing the Taoist internal Neidan practice in The Secret of the Golden Flower with the individualization process of C. G. Jung. Through literature research and comparative analysis, concepts such as huí guāng fǎn zhào(回光返照), xìng mìng hé yī(性命合一), jiān lǐ jiào qū(坎離交媾), and shí shén(識神)·yuán shén(元神) were analyzed by corresponding them to group unconsciousness, archetype, active imagination, mandala, shadow, anima and animus, and self. As a result, it was found that the stage of Taoist practice corresponds in stages with shadow confrontation, anima and animus integration, self-embodiment, and self-realization. However, Jung’s interpretation revealed its limitations that it did not sufficiently reflect the physical and energetic dimensions of Taoist practice. This study provided an academic basis to understand the structural connection between the Eastern and Western spiritual traditions and the meaning of self-realization. Future research requires an empirical approach including performance experience and clinical cases, and various studies including the concept of physical energy in the performance of the Taoist meditation are required. Through this, an enhanced and broadened comprehension of the integration and self-realization of the human mind will be possible.
