AB - This study examines regional differences in industrial structure and the determinants of sales specialization in the Korean bio-industry. Using data from the Bio-Industry Survey and the National Establishment Survey for 2020–2023, location quotient (LQ)-based specialization indices for establishments, employees, and sales were calculated. Industrial agglomeration was measured using Empirical Bayes-adjusted LQs and principal component analysis. The results reveal significant regional variations in industrial structure, indicating the need for differentiated policy approaches based on regional characteristics. Employee specialization positively influences sales specialization, whereas establishment specialization shows a negative direct effect but a positive indirect effect through employee specialization, suggesting a competitive mediation mechanism. Industrial agglomeration also has a positive effect on sales specialization, and this relationship is strengthened as firm size increases. By focusing on sales specialization, this study identifies the performance structure of the bio-industry and demonstrates that the impact of industrial agglomeration varies according to firm size. The findings suggest that policies promoting firm growth and employment expansion are more effective than those aimed solely at increasing the number of firms.
