ABSTRACT

This study examines how agentic AI adoption reduces organizational agency costs by integrating agency theory, the technical characteristics of agentic AI, and AI governance. The research model sets agentic AI adoption as the independent variable, information asymmetry reduction and monitoring efficiency improvement as dual mediators, agency cost reduction as the dependent variable, and AI governance as the moderator. Based on survey data from 350 companies that have adopted or plan to adopt AI, agentic AI adoption showed significant positive effects on information asymmetry reduction (β=.530, p<.001) and monitoring efficiency improvement (β=.494, p<.001), both of which partially mediated agency cost reduction. AI governance further strengthened the effect of agentic AI adoption on agency cost reduction (β=.113, p=.013). The study contributes by reinterpreting agentic AI’s organizational effects as an agency cost reduction mechanism and highlights the need to build AI governance capabilities such as log tracking, approval systems, risk management, explainability, and clear accountability.
