AB - This study aims to investigate the psychological pathways through which sports participation motivation leads to behavioral development among youth soccer players, focusing on the mediating role of multidimensional self-concept (academic, social, family, and emotional self). A survey of 479 players in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions collected in 2008 was analyzed using multiple regression analysis. The results showed that 'fun/enjoyment' motivation, as an antecedent predictor, was a key factor enhancing academic and emotional self-concepts. Second, the sub-factors of self-concept exerted differential effects on both positive and negative behavioral development. While academic, family, and emotional self-concepts significantly promoted pro-social 'sociable behaviors' and inhibited deviation, a higher 'social self'—which overvalues peer recognition—paradoxically aggravated 'delinquent behaviors' alongside sociable behaviors. Third, multidimensional self-concept significantly partially mediated the relationship between participation motivation and behavioral development. This study demonstrates the psychological mechanism wherein sports involvement shapes internal self-structures and transfers into multifaceted behavioral trajectories, suggesting the necessity of holistic coaching paradigms to mitigate dysfunctional conformity within sports groups.
