AB - This study was conducted to examine the life journeys and structural determinants of re-entry among individuals with developmental disabilities who underwent community independent living after transitioning out of residential facilities but ultimately failed to settle down. Applying an explanatory multiple case study design, this study analyzed narrative and archival case management data from five individuals with developmental disabilities and three frontline case managers who facilitated their transitions and aftercare. The analysis revealed three major themes, eight categories, and 16 meaning units: 'structural vulnerability in the independent living transition phase,' 'failure in community settlement and the destructive dynamics of independent living,' and 'the catastrophe of independent living and recovery for survival through institutional re-entry.' Based on these empirical findings, this study critically reflects on the current standardized, output-oriented de-institutionalization roadmaps. Furthermore, it provides foundational data for establishing tailored, sustainable maintenance models and public-private partnership aftercare systems designed to safeguard the survival and safety of individuals with developmental disabilities.
