AB - In line with the national roadmap for the deinstitutionalization of people with disabilities, this study explores the motivations for community transition and the multifaceted experiences during the early settlement process of people with developmental disabilities who had experienced long-term institutionalization. The participants included five individuals with developmental disabilities who had lived in residential facilities in Gyeonggi-do for over five years before transition, along with three case managers. Utilizing a multiple case study design, data collected through in-depth interviews and institutional documents were analyzed using within-case and cross-case thematic analysis methods. The findings revealed that, first, the motivation for transition stemmed from a combination of the 'desire for independent living' to ensure privacy and 'social relationship needs' driven by envy of independent peers, with active encouragement and pre-independence training from the facilities acting as key facilitators. Second, during the settlement process, the participants experienced positive changes such as increased autonomy and improved social skills, yet they simultaneously endured a multifaceted journey marked by poor working and housing conditions, and social isolation due to community prejudice. Based on these insights, this study suggests the necessity of implementing tailored, practical independence education and establishing comprehensive housing retention services for early settlement that reflect local regional characteristics.
