ABSTRACT

This study examines the effect of sports participation motivation on social behaviors among youth soccer players and verifies the mediating effect of peer-relations. A survey of 479 players in the Seoul and Gyeonggi regions in 2008 was analyzed using multiple regression and covariance structure analysis. The results showed that 'fun/enjoyment' motivation promoted positive peer-relations (help, recognition). Second, positive peer-relations increased 'sociable behavior', while negative relations (exclusivity, conflict) aggravated 'delinquent' and 'competitive' behaviors. Third, participation motivation had a significant indirect effect on social behaviors mediated by peer-relations. This study demonstrates that intrinsic motivation transfers into socio-relational domains, contributing to personality development, and suggests introducing cooperation-oriented programs in youth soccer.
