ABSTRACT

This study aims to explore the meaning of the individuation process experienced by young adult female social media influencers in the social media environment and to understand the psychological process through which they recognize and integrate their inner selves. The research questions are: “What are the individuation experiences of young adult female social media influencers?” and “What is the meaning of their individuation experiences?” As a research method, three young adult female social media influencers who actively use Instagram were selected, and the narrative inquiry method was applied. The results of this study are as follows. first, the participants experienced the individuation process through recognizing the tension between the “presented self” and the “inner self” in a life centered on external image and social recognition. Second, the meaning of the individuation experience was interpreted in existential, relational, and life-contextual dimensions. The participants recognized psychological tensions formed through experiences of deficiency and loss during their developmental process and reconstructed the direction of their lives through self-reflection. This study has significance in providing foundational data for counseling and psychotherapy interventions by examining the individuation process of young adult female social media influencers.
