ABSTRACT

In the Kim Jong-Un era, North Korea stresses the importance of information technology for economic development and pursues the development of knowledge economy. In the information age, authoritarian state leaders are required to choose between expanding access to information and controlling it. For economic development, developing countries need the introduction of information technology, and to enhance the openness of information technology, market competition and deregulation are needed. But because of the potential of information technology that can facilitate radical political system changes from below, authoritarian governance must simultaneously choose openness for economic efficiency and control for political stability. The purpose of this study is to examine how the development of information technology in the Kim Jong-Un era affects North Korea’ politics and economy. This paper firstly, it theoretically develops the concept of previous research and development national theory on the correlation between the development of North Korean information technology and economic development. Second, it explains the current state of North Korea’s information technology development during the Kim Jong-Un era. Third, it considers the development of information technology and political and economic implications of Kim Jong-Un’s era.
