ABSTRACT

Hiroshima has endeavored to emphasize the ‘peace city’ image to overcome the scars of atomic bombing. But the image isn’t completely empathized. This study focused on the issue of ‘empathy’ in making image of the city through questions about the ‘peace city’ Hiroshima. We reviewed the background of the Hiroshima Peace Cities Initiative and conducted field surveys. For representative image of the city, ‘empathy’ based on the ‘authenticity’ and ‘social empathy’ based on objective perspective are needed. The authenticity builds a empathetic image, which also extends to the city’s identity and brand. In order to making image of the city, not only emotional empathy but also awareness of various subjects and social empathy should be considered.
