ABSTRACT

The marketization of North Korea spread rapidly in the 2000s and has a positive effect on economic growth as well as the lives of its people. The resulting change in the relationship between the market and the plan is expected to serve as a major driving force for promoting the transformation of the economic structure. This study analyzed the changes in the economic structure of North Korea using the marketization stage model, which is the early stage of Kornai’s reform socialist system. As a result of the analysis, the North Korean economy is transforming into a structure in which the planned economy and the market economy coexist interdependently, and this change appears to be an important driving force leading the transformation of the economic structure.
