AB - This study aimed to examine students' understanding, applications, and practical experiences regarding human rights sensitivity. Through the review of the students’ responses in human rights courses established as liberal arts courses in universities, The study reviewed the direction and tasks of human rights education in universities to enhance human rights sensitivity. Students recognized that human rights sensitivity includes cognitive, emotional, and practical aspects. Although students had awareness and sympathy for human rights issues, they had difficulty putting them into practice. However, they were participating in solving human rights issues through various activities.
The direction and tasks that university human rights education should aim for are as follows. First, in order to enhance human rights sensitivity that integrates cognitive, emotional, and practical elements, human rights education should allow students to reflectively analyze their own experiences. Second, they should be made aware of and sustain their willingness to practice for the promotion of human rights. Human rights course classes can become a ‘space for solidarity’ where students can ‘think and practice together.’ Third, The teaching process of human rights courses itself must be democratic. In order for students to experience the ‘process’ of human rights education democratically, professors must reflect on and practice human rights-based education methods.
