ABSTRACT

This study sought to investigate out-of-home experiences of wheelchair users, particularly their use of low-floor buses and subways, and to provide insight for improving public transportation. An online survey was conducted, collecting and analyzing responses from 506 wheelchair users in Seoul with physical or brain lesion disabilities. Social and environmental factors such as transportation inconvenience, lack of accessible facilities, and negative attitudes from others were revealed to be major barriers preventing wheelchair users from going outside. Notably, respondents who had recently used public transportation reported anticipating different challenges compared to those who had not, underscoring the importance of differentiating between these groups when diagnosing issues and developing targeted solutions. Specific challenges identified in public transportation use included discriminatory attitudes toward people with disabilities as well as poor physical accessibility. Based on these findings, the study recommends strengthening social awareness to enhance mobility rights of people with disabilities.
