ABSTRACT

This study attempted to explain the continuity and constraints of the human rights movement, focusing on the experiences of adolescent activists who have emerged as political actors in the midst of changes in Korean society since the mid-2010s. The youth’s involvement in the youth human rights movement was significantly influenced by the Sewol ferry disaster and the state-authored history textbook controversy. By examining the differences in ageism as well as gender, region, and workability within the youth, adolescents expanded the scope of human rights movements and activities such as gender equality, environment, and labor. However, regional movement due to college entrance, depoliticization within universities, weakening youth identity, and difficulty in living due to economic independence also made it difficult to continue their activities. Nevertheless, it is required to improve the constraints brought about by the transition to adulthood, given the reality that the experience of the youth human rights movement is a strong driving force for continuing activities afterwards.
