ABSTRACT

This study aims to identify link between map drawing and learning for map and to suggest an effective utilization plan of map drawing in the geography education by comparing goals and management system of the children map drawing competitions in Korea and Japan and the Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition, organized by the International Cartographic Association as well as their award-winning works. Even with a short history, topics in Korean children map drawing competition have been dramatically changed from the pictorial map of a town to the map characterizing Korea in a global society in creative, artistic ways. This trend in map drawing competitions demonstrates that recent map education pays extra attention in teaching the symbolism and artistic value of maps in addition to teaching the principles of map and the usage of symbols. Giving emphasis to the combination of environmental map making activities with geographic inquiry at the map drawing competitions in Japan and running map competition by theme and emphasizing the educational application of maps at the Barbara Petchenik Children’s World Map Competition provide useful suggestions for the children map drawing competitions in Korea about how to manage future competition and how to establish an effective utilization plan of map drawing in the geography education.
