ABSTRACT

Geomorphological map is the map showing the landforms classified by the geomorphic knowledge, spatial distribution of the specific forms and forming material, transporting routes of material, chronology of the forms and dominant forming processes. Geomorphological mapping has been the one of major research method in geomorphic research since 1950’s. It has been used to designate the preservation area for the protection of natural environment, to build the plan for disaster prevention and to provide the basic information for social infrastructures. There is strong need for introduction of national geomorphological mapping. It is reviewed the case of Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherland and Sweden, providing the geomorphic map as a part of geo-scientific information. It is reviewed that various geomorphologic legends for geomorphological mapping proposed by researchers. It is found that overall shape of the surface, specific landforms, related forming processes, substrate material and time of the landscape forming events are included in the legend system with various symbols and colours. The existing classification scheme of landforms to designate preservation area should be improved, if it is applied to geomorphological map. The landforms should be re-classified by dominant forming processes and the size rather than location. Field survey and field-based scientific survey to find the geomorphic environment of the mapping area should be emphasized. The use of geomorphological map to official environment survey like environmental impact evaluation should be considered.
