China and Japan have published their national historical geography map for past 50 years. North Korea initiated national historical geography map publication in 2007. Compared to neighboring countries, Republic of Korea has only recently started to work on its national historical geography maps. From 1990s combined with the World Wide Web use, historical geography maps are developed using GIS software resulting in digital maps. This procedure changed status of map from simple figures on a paper to a complex body of huge amount of information. Consequently, digital map making procedure required wide cooperation including geographers, historians, GIS programmers, and Web designers. This study presents definition and characteristics of historical geography maps. In developing the historical geography maps, basic 4 subjects of information are introduced including administrative regions, natural environments, transportation networks, and a gazetteer database. For each subject, categories, contents, and construction methods are provided. Historical geography maps are considered as a big database covering complex information about geography, history and their changes over time. Consequently, updates and managements of the database become critical issues in historical geography maps. Basic data management methods are briefly introduced at the end of paper.
