ABSTRACT

This study examined how social withdrawal, national identity, parental support, peer relationships, and teacher relationships affect the academic adjustment of multicultural adolescents. For this purpose, we used Latent Growth Model using the 7th, 8th, and 9th years of the Korean Youth Policy Research Institute's Multicultural Adolescents Panel Study. The results of the analysis showed that, first, the initial values and rates of change of the multicultural adolescent academic adjustment model and their respective variances were significant. Second, the time-dependent variables, peer relationships and teacher relationships, were analyzed to be highly significant in all grades of high school. Third, the time-independent variables social withdrawal and parental support were found to have significant effects on both initial and rate of change. Based on our findings, we suggest policy implications for improving the academic adjustment of multicultural youth.
