ABSTRACT

In this study, an extended human capital model is developed to examine how generative AI reshapes educational investment and skill formation. Unlike traditional human capital theory, which views education as a single human capital accumulation process, this study distinguishes between technical human capital acquired through coding education and applied/adaptive human capital developed through AI-utilization education. According to the extended model, as AI technological advancement increases, the relative value of coding skills decreases, while the value of AI-utilizing skills increases, leading optimal individual educational investment to shift from coding education to AI-utilizing education. This study provides a new theoretical foundation for educational design and human capital strategies in the era of generative AI. However, there are limitations in assuming AI technology development as an exogenous variable, indicating the need for future empirical verification.
