ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study was to analyze the impact of retirement preparation on subjective well-being among middle-aged and older adults and to verify the mediating effect of loneliness. For this purpose, responses from 2,165 middle-aged and older adults aged 50 to under 65, selected from the 2024 Social Integration Survey data conducted by the Korea Institute of Public Administration (KIPA), were analyzed using SPSS 26.0 Process Macro 4.2, Model 4. The results indicated that retirement preparation positively influenced subjective well-being. Second, retirement preparation negatively affected loneliness. Third, loneliness negatively influenced subjective well-being, confirming that loneliness partially mediates the relationship between retirement preparation and subjective well-being. The statistical significance of the mediating effect was verified through bootstrapping, and it was found to be statistically significant. Based on these findings, practical and policy efforts were suggested, such as active retirement preparation for enhancing subjective well-being and forming social relationships to alleviate loneliness.
