Objectives: This case study aimed to evaluate changes in periodontal pathogens and systemic disease indicators following the adjunctive use of probiotics for periodontal treatment. Methods: Two adults, a 64-year-old male and 71-year-old female, were selected with ethical approval and underwent comprehensive oral and systemic health assessments before and after probiotic intake with periodontal debridement. Results: There was a significant reduction in the periodontal pathogens, particularly Porphyromonas gingivalis and Treponema forsythia, and no adverse systemic indicators were observed. Moreover, a trend toward improved lipid profiles was noted, suggesting a potential positive impact on systemic health. Conclusions: This study shows the potential role of probiotics in enhancing oral health and preventing systemic diseases, thus highlighting the need for further research and clinical trials.

Objectives: This study aimed to verify the effect on students’ competency and self-directed capacity after a capstone design teaching method with community dental hygiene class. Methods: The study participants were 34 dental hygiene students taking a 4-year community dental hygiene course at a university located in City C. The research tool consisted of 52 questions on major competency and 20 questions on self-directed capacity. Results: After the capstone design class, overall dental hygienists’ competency increased (p<0.05), and competencies of clinical dental hygiene and community health promotion showed a high increase (p<0.001). As a result of analyzing the increase in dental hygienists’ competency according to self-directed learning ability, the group with low self-directed capacity showed high improvement in clinical dental hygiene competency and community oral health promotion competency. Conclusions: This study confirmed that the capstone design course in community dental hygiene improved students’ competency and self-directed capacity, and suggests that it is an excellent teaching method for training competencies required for future society.

Objectives: This study aimed to confirm the correlation between oral frailty and health-related quality of life (HINT-8) among older adults in Korea. Methods: The data of 1,318 individuals aged ≥65 years who participated in the eighth Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (2019) were analyzed using complex sample statistical analysis. Results: Chewing discomfort was found to decrease the HINT-8 scores by 1.246, 1.324, and 1.089 times in the physical, social, and mental domains, respectively. Speech discomfort was found to decrease the HINT-8 scores by 1.275, 1.449, and 1.175 times in the physical, social, and mental domains, respectively. The HINT-8 scores of participants with ＜19 natural teeth were lower in the physical and social domains. Similarly, the HINT-8 scores of participants with brushing frequency of ＜2 were lower in the positive health domain. Non-use of oral hygiene products led to a reduction in the HINT-8 score in the social health domain. Conclusions: Oral frailty in older adults reduces the health-related quality of life. Thus, it is necessary to formulate policies to manage oral frailty in this population and develop specialized programs for the management of oral frailty.
