AB - This study analyzes the shame experienced by the Christian suicide family during mourning process in Korean chemyun culture through Kohut's self-psychology and the Christian counseling point of view. Different from Western individualism, Confucianism, which is widely spread in Korean culture, emphasizes importance of collectivism, focusing on relationships. Typical Koreans want to be calm when facing death and are ashamed to reveal the bereavement pain because of chemyun. The Korean church community is also deeply connected with the relationship culture. Thus, the Christian suicide family suffers from the mourning process experienced by ordinary bereaves, along with the indescribable disgrace and guilt of life that they have not kept their families as believers. This research compiles thoughts of the understanding of the suicide family and examines the shame experienced by the suicide family in Chemyun culture. Additionally, the shame of the Christian suicide family was considered as Christian counseling point of views based on the embarrassment of Koreans in objective self-awareness through the extended research on Kohut's self-psychology. The key messages are needs of follow-up studies on Christian community’s counseling perspectives on the mourning experience of the Christian suicide family and the preparation of professional care program within the Christian community to restore the psychological, social and religious health of the Christian suicide family in the church community under the cultural influence.
