ABSTRACT

Perspective of human being affects counseling. Counseling is a field to help a person, and the perspective a counselor has on human beings becomes the starting point of the theory and practice of counseling. Christian counseling is an activity that seeks to help people based on the unique and important human understanding. Two aspects are discussed to track what perspective of human being is in practice in Christian counseling. One is “self”, the core concept of general explanation of human being, and the other is “soul”, the essence of Christianity in human understanding. This paper summarizes the perspective on human being behind the term “self” and what kind of influence self-centered philosophy has in counseling. It also investigates what human understanding was missed out in the process of applying “self”in Christian counseling. To identify the perspective of human being, this paper investigates human being’s constition and character in the Bible. According to the Bible, human beings are created with bodies and souls and has a holistic personality. It confirms that the understanding of “soul” is necessary and crucial in Christian counseling. Christianity emphasizes that human being’s “soul” is the essence of the person and requires recovery of this part. The recovery of the soul is possible through relationship with God, other people, and oneself. The soul care has to be reconstructed and developed for this generation.
