ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of transferring faith to the next generation in fourth-generation Christian families by using the spiritual genogram. To this end, qualitative case study was conducted with two fourth-generation Christian families living in the Seoul metropolitan area. The findings of the study are as follows: First, in these fourth-generation Christian families the Christian faith is integral and central in their lives. Second, the faith and religious lifestyles of the previous generations are handed down to the next generation. Third, the religious wandering and backsliding of the fourth generation are relatively short and in the process their faith are deepened and strengthened. Fourth, family relationships are built based on biblical family order. Fifth, the third generation’s respectful attitude toward the fourth–generation children encourages the voluntary and positive choice of their Christian faith. Sixth, the positive family dynamics and relationships have a positive influence on the families’ religious life. Lastly, the analysis of spiritual genogram shows that the human characteristics of the participating families directly affect their religious life. This study is meaningful and unique in that it studies cases of fourth-generation Christian families through in-depth interviews and obtains raw data on the generation transfer process of faith. In addition, it produces and uses spiritual genogram in the analysis of the case studies.
