ABSTRACT

PHEV has been highlighted as most promising green car alternative in the near future because it has the all-electric capability as electric vehicle in urban area and a smaller on-board ICE(Internal combustion engine) for extended range capability as an HEV. However, there is only one PHEV model available in the market, GM volts with 16kWh battery in U.S. market. To find optimal PHEV configuration of battery size for Korean drivers and its economic impact to the nationwide, simulation method is used considering driver’s real driving patterns as well as their possession behaviors. According to the simulation results, PHEV’s market share increases by adopting PHEV with various battery size. Particularly, PHEV with 12kWh battery and 28kWh battery are cost minimizing model according to the Korean drivers’ driving behaviors. By launching two cost-efficient PHEVs, 12.6% of social cost related to the personal transportation for next 30 years is reduced. It is caused by the increase of PHEVs which reduce energy cost compare to the HEV by using more electricity and need less electricity charging infrastructure than pure electric vehicle.
