ABSTRACT

The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships between parenting-burden, depression and self-esteem of mothers with disabled children. The objects of this study were 173 mothers of children with disabilities residing in rehabilitation center, rehabilitation hospital, and clinic center, which statistical analysis revealed. The major results of this study are as follows: The mothers of disabled children showed above average parenting-burden than mothers of non-disabled children and their most stressful point was their worries about their children's future. Two-thirds (61.8%) of the mothers in this study was in depression and 40% of them were diagnosed as depression. The depression of the mothers increases if their children have severe disabilities. The depression of the mothers of the children with disabilities revealed positive correlations in all areas such as physical, psychological, societal and economical burden. The mothers’ self-esteem has negative correlations to the parenting-burden in areas such as physical, psychological, societal and economical burden. Finally, the depression has significant effect on parenting-burden and psychological burdens and affect their self-esteem.
