ABSTRACT

[Purpose] This study explored the perspectives of mothers of infants with disabilities regarding in infant classes at special education support centers. [Method] Accordingly, in-depth interviews were conducted with eight mothers of infants with disabilities who were placed in infant classes at a special education support center. [Results] The themes derived through data analysis were a class to looking forward and disappointing class, disire for classes with peers, and if only I had known about special education information earlier. Mothers expressed gratitude for receiving help through diverse and prepared classes that took into account the characteristics of infants with disabilities and consultation with special educators. On the other hand, they said they were bitter about the use of textbooks that did not match their level and the simple and uninteresting classes. In addition, mothers of infants with disabilities were disappointed about the difficulty in communicating with the special education support center and wished for a class where infants with disabilities could have social interactions with their peers. They also expressed regret that special education could not be started sooner due to lack of information. [Conclusion] The findings of this study suggest that there is a need to secure the expertise of special education teachers to operate classes for infants with disabilities and to improve the quality of early intervention services, and that promotion to revitalize special education services is urgent, especially the needs of mothers raising infants with disabilities. It is necessary to reflect the opinions and improve the early intervention service system so that the special education support center can play its role and function
