ABSTRACT

This paper analyzes the social thought on the welfare states focusing on theories of social welfare by Myrdals(Gunnar Myrdal and Alva Myrdal) and Gøsta Esping-Andersen. Though their ideas of social welfare show the time difference of almost half century, they show common characteristics of developing ideas of social welfare based on political philosophy and social sciences. In addition, they are enthusiastic supporters of social democratic welfare states in common. While Myrdals deal with the problems of welfare state in the early period, Esping-Andersen deals with the crisis of the welfare states after the golden era of the welfare states. They provide the foundation of the theory of the social democratic welfare state based on social scientific research. An emphasis on “sciences should lead the politics” is well reflected in Myrdals’ discussion of the population crisis and Esping-Andersen’s preventive responses to the family changes. Those have significant implication to the Korean society suffering from the population crisis and the family crisis simultaneously.
