ABSTRACT

A New Direction and Method for Teaching Classical Novels in Korean Universities Kwon, Sun-Keung Teaching classical novels in colleges needs to be changed according to new educational environments. Rather than pursuing easy frameworks of settled instructions, the diversity of general education programs should be sought. Nowadays, many of Korean literature majors have been entering the industry of education and culture. Accordingly, the instruction in Korean departments should be transformed by not giving too much stress on the <theoriy of classical novel>. Listed are some of the possible subjects: Courses in General Subjects: <Classical Novels and Digital Narratives>, <Classical Novels and Culture Contents>, <Classical Novels and Cinema>, <Classical Novels and Image Culture>, <Classical Novels and Culture Art>, <Classical Novels and Journey of History> Courses in Major Field: <Re-readings of Classical Novels>, <Reaching out for Classical Novels>, <Classical Novels in the Age of Multimedia> Undoubtedly, there should be flexible shifts in courses between general subjects and major fields. Some real courses could be divided into three steps: 1) Reading novels thoroughly; 2) Producing some fruitful discussions based on previous readings; 3) Opening new pathways for modernistic recreation. Some of the suggested methods are: ① Expanding texts; ② Searching for ways in the relationship with movies; ③ Comparing digital proses with classical novels; ④ Comparing the genre of culture art and classical novels.
