ABSTRACT

The purpose of this research study is to investigate the patterns and management methods of the authentic precedents appearing in long novels in Korean. As already known, long novels in Korean apply a wide variety of authentic precedents into enormous narratives, to an unlimited extent. Given the fact that those authentic precedents utilized are based on contents contained in various areas such as scriptures, history books, moral training textbooks, literary works, etc, it can be considered that investigating authentic precedents means exploring knowledge base shared by those who preferred works of those times. In this regard, this study examined 12 long novels in Korean created in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries and steadily read until the nineteenth century to understand authentic precedents emerging in works, in a bid to consider how long novels in Korean use and accept authentic precedents in reality. The analytic result of this study shows that 545 authentic precedents are utilized in long novels in Korean, and they were quoted from anecdotage, such as 『Seseolshineo』, and various poem works in the Chinese Character in addition to scriptures, history books, moral training textbooks presented in the past. Also, it is found that those authentic precedents are contained in more than two works as a whole. This means that those of those times really share knowledge through novels. Also it is identified that long novels in Korean utilizing various authentic precedents show differences in characters of each work. This seems to be derived from the differences in concerns, attitudes and roles of works as to the managements of authentic precedents, and those in knowledge that the author has.
