AB - This study examines the Aesthetics and Meanings of Bujisojong(不知所終) Ending from the perspective of Reader-Reception, focusing on the emotional and cognitive communication experienced by readers. Centering around Jeon-gi(傳奇) Novels, this paper identifies three distinct patterns: Endings that heighten emotional immersion to evoke tragic beauty; Endings that induce emotional distancing by prompting readers to ponder multiple interpretive possibilities, thereby leaving a lingering cognitive resonance; and Endings that prioritize cognitive awakening over affective immersion to generate critical irony.
The Aesthetics and Meanings of Bujisojong(不知所終) Ending were significantly influenced by the outcome of conflicts and the specific structural form of the ending. Within the “Defeat-in-Conflict” and “Closed-Ending” framework, Bujisojong(不知所終) primarily functioned in two distinct directions: first, by inheriting the overarching sorrow of the narrative to cultivate a tragic aesthetic; and second, by presenting new possibilities that distance the reader from emotional immersion, thereby gesturing toward an Open-Ended structure and leaving a lingering cognitive resonance. In the “Overcoming-Conflict” and “Closed-Ending” framework, Bujisojong(不知所終) dramatically expanded new possibilities, thereby subverting the conventional meaning of the narrative closure.
In Joshin, Gimhyeongamho, and Unyeongjeon, Bujisojong(不知所終) extends the sorrow of “Defeat-in-Conflict” to evoke a tragic aesthetic. In Adogira, Pouigyojip, Manboksajeopogi, and YonggungBuyeonrok, it generates diverse interpretive possibilities, enabling emotional distancing rather than passive immersion in grief. In Choesaengujingi and Hasaenggiujeon, incorporating Bujisojong(不知所終) into “Overcoming- Conflict” closures casts doubt on the resolution, questioning narrative reliability and accentuating its fictionality.
