AB - The purpose of this study is to deepen the understanding of Yeongsam-byeolgok, composed by Gwon Seop(1671–1759). To this end, this study analyzes the essence of the poetic inspiration embodied in the work. Yeongsam-byeolgok is a Travel Gasa that captures the travel experiences of a journey departing from Jecheon, passing through Yeongwol, and arriving in Samcheok in 1704. A comparison between the prologue(Seosa) of Yeongsam-byeolgok and the actual travel records of 1704 reveals that the departure circumstances described in the narrative differ from the historical facts of the journey. This implies that Yeongsam-byeolgok should be analyzed by placing a greater distance between the author and the narrator than is typical for a standard Travel Gasa. This observation forms the core critical awareness that prompted this study. Accordingly, this research explores the underlying theme and the author's creative consciousness by analyzing the travel experiences and poetic inspiration articulated in Yeongsam-byeolgok.
The results of the discussion are as follows. Chapter 2 analyzes the departure circumstances in the work from a factual perspective, focusing on the prologue of Yeongsam-byeolgok. The findings reveal that the prologue is a dramatized construct utilizing not only the journey at that time but also previous travel experiences from 1704. Chapter 3 investigates the true nature of the poetic inspiration embodied in the main body (Bonsa). At the core of the main body lies the expression of joy derived from the unexpected, experienced along the unconventional route from Yeongwol to Samcheok. Chapter 4 synthesizes the findings of Chapters 2 and 3 to summarize the characteristics of Yeongsam- byeolgok as a cohesive poetic text, further approaching its theme and the author's creative consciousness. Through this, it is elucidated that Yeongsam-byeolgok is a song that affirms the value of travel as an actual lived experience.
