ABSTRACT

As people spend more time living and working indoors, and as Internet of Things (IoT) applications increasingly focus on indoor environments, the demand for precise location tracking of people and objects within buildings is rapidly growing. Accordingly, indoor positioning technology has been extensively researched to provide application services within indoor environments. Outdoors, user location is primarily estimated using satellite navigation systems, such as the Global Positioning System (GPS). However, indoors, GPS signals have difficulty reaching the inside of buildings, and location estimation is difficult due to problems such as multipath. Accordingly, techniques utilizing Wi-Fi, BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy), UWB (Ultra-Wideband), RFID (Radio Frequency Identification), and IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit) are used for indoor location estimation. In this paper, we examine the concept of indoor positioning technology and review the latest trends in related technologies.
