ABSTRACT

This study explores an single-anchor positioning approach using ultra-wideband (UWB) technology by combining time-of-flight (ToF) ranging with phase difference of arrival (PDoA) from a multi-antenna UWB device. Conventional two-way ranging (TWR) systems require multiple anchors, leading to higher deployment cost and complexity. In contrast, we propose a minimal configuration that uses a single fixed device and PDoA-based angle information to estimate relative angle, distance, and position without explicit initial calibration. We implement the system with a practical UWB platform and evaluate its performance. The results show that the PDoA-based angle and distance estimates closely match ground truth, enabling reliable estimation of the fixed device orientation and the other device’s position. Quantitatively, we observe an horizontal angular error of 7.87°, vertical angular error of 0.42° and a 3D position RMS error of 0.816 m, indicating that competitive positioning accuracy is achievable with far fewer devices than conventional UWB systems. These findings suggest that PDoA-enabled UWB can reduce installation effort while maintaining practical accuracy for indoor positioning and related applications.
