ABSTRACT

The importance of digital twin technology for the rapid advancement of drone technology and effective operations is increasing. Digital twin technology, based on real-time communication between physical and virtual drones, enables context-appropriate control by predicting the drone's future state. This study analyzes 25 academic papers published between 2020 and 2025 on digital twin integration in drone simulation, deriving research trends, technical approaches, application domains, technical challenges, and future research directions. This study identifies five major technical challenges: (1) minimizing Sim-to-Real gap, (2) scalability and large-scale system management, (3) lack of standardization, (4) security and privacy concerns, and (5) insufficient verification and certification frameworks. To address these challenges, future research directions are proposed: intelligent adaptive synchronization mechanisms, distributed digital twin frameworks, physics-data hybrid models, real-time anomaly detection and predictive maintenance, standardization and open-source ecosystem development, and enhanced security and privacy protection. This research systematically organizes the current state of digital twin integration technology in drone simulation and presents directions for future research, thereby contributing to both academic and practical advancement in this field.
