ABSTRACT

This study aims to empirically analyze the effects of the structural characteristics of the MPE Industry in Jeollanam-do, linked to the Shipbuilding Industry, under changing global trade environments, and to examine the mediating effect of Export Value and the moderating effect of the Exchange Rate. For this purpose, the number of employees, value added, and shipments were used as industrial structure variables, Export Value as a mediating variable, and the KRW/USD Exchange Rate as a moderating variable. Regression analysis, mediation analysis, and moderated mediation analysis were conducted. The results show that Export Value is primarily determined by shipments rather than employment or value added, while GRNI per Capita is mainly influenced by employment rather than shipments or value added. In addition, Export Value does not have a significant effect on GRNI per Capita, indicating that the mediating effect is not supported. Furthermore, neither the moderating effect of the Exchange Rate nor the moderated mediation effect is statistically significant. These findings suggest that the MPE Industry in Jeollanam-do, closely associated with the Shipbuilding Industry, is characterized by a production-oriented structure in which Export Value does not sufficiently translate into GRNI per Capita. Therefore, policy efforts should shift from a production-centered approach to strengthening local value chains and enhancing income circulation within the region.
