ABSTRACT

This study aimed to develop an Early Childhood SW·AI Competency Framework and to conceptualize a Play-Based Competency Development Mechanism. Literature on digital competence, AI literacy, computational thinking, and early childhood SW·AI education was systematically analyzed to integrate key concepts from the perspectives of child development and play-based education. The results identified seven foundational competency domains: Data Understanding, Classification and Pattern Recognition, Algorithmic Thinking, Problem Solving and Improvement, Prediction and Decision Making, AI Understanding and Interaction, and Digital and AI Ethics. A play-based mechanism was also conceptualized by structuring the relationships among exploration, interaction, problem solving, experience reconstruction, cognitive and social learning processes, and the development of SW·AI competencies. This study provides a conceptual framework for understanding both the components of young children's SW·AI competencies and their development through play, offering a theoretical basis for play-based curricula and instructional design in early childhood SW·AI education.
