ABSTRACT

As greenhouse-gas regulations for ships become increasingly stringent, the integrated operation of multiple power sources and power management systems (PMS) has become important for improving ship energy efficiency. This study analyzed 219 hourly operational samples collected from a 320K-class very large crude carrier (VLCC) from 6 to 15 July 2024, of which 199 complete samples were used for SG-related analyses. Shaft-generator (SG) operation was identified in 185 samples; the main-engine speed ranged from 36.7 to 51.1 RPM (45.2±5.3 RPM), while the mean SG power and load ratio were 692.3±135.0 kW and 47.7±9.3%, respectively. The G1+SG and G2+SG combinations accounted for 81.4% of the valid samples, and the SG power-sharing ratio for single-AG–SG parallel operation, including G3+SG, was 49.8±0.8%. Representative operating states and load-change magnitudes obtained from ship data were combined with SG control-boundary conditions to develop seven PMS HILS validation scenarios covering normal parallel operation, SG-only operation, load variation, power-source transition, low- and high-speed limits, and SG disconnection. Each scenario was defined in terms of input conditions, triggers, expected PMS responses, and evaluation items. The scope of this study is limited to scenario development and does not include PMS performance testing in a HILS environment.
