ABSTRACT

This paper proposes a web-based interactive 3D molecular visualization system to support the understanding of three-dimensional molecular structures and reaction mechanisms in organic chemistry. Conventional two-dimensional structural formulas and planar learning materials have limitations in representing spatial molecular arrangements and structural changes during reactions. The proposed system includes the Mitsunobu reaction, the CuAAC reaction, and the conformational interconversion of 1,2-dibromocyclohexane as major learning models. Three-dimensional molecular models are implemented using Unity and WebGL, providing interactive functions for rotation and zooming in a web browser. Reaction mechanisms and conformational changes are visualized through step-by-step animations, and a Q&A board and QR-code-based learning links are integrated into the system. The major 3D exploration and animation functions are functionally evaluated in PC and smartphone environments. The proposed system presents a web-based interactive educational approach for visualizing three-dimensional molecular structures and reaction processes in organic chemistry.
